THE AUSTRALIANS WIN THE CUP. LONDON,
July 7.
The Australians beat the Leander
crew in the final for the Grand Challenge
Cup. The Leander crew rowed
well, but Australia was not quite so
much together as in the previous races,
nevertheless, at the mile the Australians
led by half a length. Leander spurted
repeatedly, but the Australians were going
strong, and kept a steady lead,
winning co For often bl v by three-quarters
of a length, amid the greatest criticism
I wish.
The time was "min. 6sec.
The King and Queen congratulated
[Sir George Reid, the High Commissioner,
on the memorable victory.
The consensus of opinion by the critics
is that the Australians were physically
much the finer looking crew, and
a better combination than the Leander.
