FOOTBALL.
i --432,
SATURDAY'S il VTCHES.
NORTH HOBART (5.a2) DEFEAT OATLANDS
(3.3).
GOOD FOOTBALL BY THE MIDST ,
LANDERS.
Although Saturday's football match had
a savouring of the "country" element
about it, and on this account failed to
draw a large crowd to the cricket
ground, it provided a pleasant surprise.
The Midlands district in days gone by
produced some sterling footballers - some
of whom won fame in matches against
teams from Victoria and South Australia.
In match on Saturday the Oatlands
players showed out-excellently for
the first quarter, and distinctly had the
better of North Hobart, who found their
opponents fully posted up in all points of
the game.- The latter, it was noticed,
had not equipped themselves with proper
foot-gear for the slippery turf, and were at
times a trifle uncertain, in their movements.
North Hobart led by a point at
half-time, and in the third quarter increased
their advantage to nine points.
The game was keenly contested throughout
the final term, North Hobart doing all
the scoring but a few minutes before
time Oatlands had the ball well forward,
and kept North Hobart busy beating them
back. The Midlanders played very fair
football, and had only about half-a-dozen
marks awarded' against them for breaches
of the rule, and some of these were trivial.
They certainly possess two promising play
ors in Mannings and Jones, both of whom"
displayed form quite equal to anything
shown by the town members. Jillett, the
captain, knows the game well, and how to
play it. Gano, Glover, Fish, Higgins,
Turner, and Butcher all played good football.
High marking was a feature of the
visitors' play, whilst they exhibited not a
little sweetness at handball. On the
North Depart side a couple of new play
ore were given a trial. One of these, a
youngster named Walton, played well forward,
and quite merited his place in the
team. Mr. H. Mooney, is usual, ably
umpired the game. Messrs. E. Sargent
and S. Roche were the goal officials, and
Messrs. J. Tremaine (Oatlands) and W. T.
Crick (Hobart) were the timekeepers.
'The scores at the various quarters were,
as under: -
First quarter: Oatlands, 2.1; North
Hobart, 0.1. ,
Second quarter: Oatlands, 2.2; North
Hobart, 1.9
Third quarter: - North Hobart, 3.12;
Oatlands, 3.3.
Final: North Hobart, 5.12 (42 points);
Oatlands, 3.3 (21 points).
North Hobart's goal were kicked by N.
Walton, Smith, Orpwood and Paterson,
1 each. Glover, Fish, and' Fleming scored
for Oatlands.
DINNER TO THE VISITING

LAUNCESTON V. MATHINNA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
LAUNCESTON. July 5.
A strong team representing -Jio Alatliin- I
na Football Association armed to-day
from Mathinna to play their annual game
with the Launceston Club. The match
took place on the cricket ground in dull,
threatening weather, which, no doubt was
responsible for the poor attendance of
spectators As to the game, during the
first half the scoring was very even, and
at half-time- the record-was:-Mathinna,]
4-3; Launceston, 2-5. On resuming, the
local players kept the ball in their oppon-
ents country, and when the bell rang
for the third time had established! a lead.
The play in the final quarter was principally
confined to the wing, only two be
hinds being recorded, one going to each
side, the scores at the finish being as fol-
lows Launceston, 5 goals 11 behinds (41
points); Mathinna, 4 goals 6 behinds (30
points). The locals thus won a very interesting
game by 11 points.

- TESTIMONIAL TO F. McGINIS. The
Melbourne "Leader" of Saturday
says-The committee of the Melbourne
Cricket Club have voted the sum of 5000
towards a testimonial fund to be initiated
J for the benefit of McGinnis, in consequence
of life being compelled to retire from football
through failing eyesight. Members
of the M.C.C. and others wishing to contribute
to the fund' are requested to
hand their donations to the hon. acting
secretary of the club, at the pavilion, of
the office, Collins-street. The committee
also decided that overtures be made to >
the- football authorities, with a view of
getting up a benefit football match in
support of the fund, for which purpose
the use of the M.C.C. ground would be
granted free of charge. Such action on,
the part of the League and Association
clubs would be a fitting tribute to the
prowess of a player whom everyone sympathises
with in his terrible misfortune,
and there should be no trouble in arrang
""firing" a" match." McGinty is a native of
Hobart where he played his early foot
badly with the old City Club. On his
leaving this colony he went to Melbourne,,
and joined the Melbourne Football Club, for
which he played until his unfortunate
affliction compelled him to retire. -No
doubt many of his old comrades and
friends in Tasmania will be only too
pleased to assist the testimonial started
by the M.C.C
