FITTINGS OF STRANDED MAHENO

PLAN OF SALVAGE

It 'is understood that the captain of the Oonah, which is anchored off Sandy Cape, will try to salvage everything of value from the Maheno and transport it

across the island, probably by bullock team, and thence by lighter to the Oonah. Captain Hasnimoto on Wednesday visited the scene of the wreck. Cap tain Tanaki and the crew of the Ma heno are still camped near the beach, and' the two captains had their first op portunity of discussing the disaster. They made an exhaustive examination of the Maheno. The ship has a list of 12 i degrees seaward, but there is -no immediate danger of her toppling over, provided tho weather remains calm. The vessel is being gradually under mined, and, if the salvage operations contemplated are to bo effective, some method of staying the Maheno up will have to be devised before heavy wea ther again sots in. Shore anchors are being laid out to keep the vessel up right;
