Cossack Note In Knitted
Tunic and Cap
Fifth Of Series
The Cossack note, so much in evidence
this year, is most attractively intro-
duced in this tunic and cap, which
comprise the fifth of ihe Margaret
Eton knitting designs.
The striking appearance of the finished
articles belie the simplicity of the
stitches used in their construction,
and knitters should have no difficulty
in following the clearly given instruc-
tions. These designs are all ex-
clusive to 'The Advertiser' and are
published in the women's pages every
Wednesday.
Materials Required
6 oz. astrakhan wool (black).
9 oz. crepe wool, shade No. 02539.
1 pair No. 9 needles.
1 pair No. 7 needles.
4 'log' buttons.
1 wooden buckle.
Abbreviations— PI., plain; pr., purl.
To fit 32 in.-34 in. bust.
Tension, 7 stitches to 1 inch.
THE FRONT
With the rust wool and No. 9 needles,
cast on 120 stitches, knit into the back
of each stitch. Knit 20 rows garter,
knit 2 tog. at the beginning and end
of the next and every 6th row, until
the etitches number 100. Wtoi there
are 47 rows from the cast on: stitches,
change to the astrakhan, and knit 5;
knit the 6th and 7th stitches tog., re
peat to end. Ttoia is observed in every
row when changing from rust io astra
khan.
Next Bow.— Knit in astrakhan.
Next Bow.— With the rust wool, knit
5 stitches, knit twice 'into the 6th
stitch, repeat to end. This is observed
in every row when changing back to
rust.
Continue in rust wool until there are
39 rows knitted, not forgetting the de
creasings. of course, which end at the
33rd row from the astrakhan rows.
When 39 rows are knitted, repeat the
astrakhan rows, and continue with the
rust wool until the stitches number
100, knit for 22 rows. At the 23rd,
and every Bth row, knit twice into the

Continue increasing until the stitches
number 120.
Wlien the rust rows number 31 from
the last row of astrakhan, repeat the
astrakhan rows. Continue with the
rust as before, not forgetting the in
creasings. Knit 23 rows rust. Repeat
the astrakhan; knit 19 rows of rust,
and repeat the astrakhan rows. Knit
2 rows rust, and the stitches now num
ber 120. Cast off 6 stitches at the be
ginning of the next two rows, and 2
tog. each end of everv alternate row.
Continue in rust until there are 15 rows
from the last rows of astrakhan. Re
peat the astrakhan rows. Knit 11
rows rust. 2 rows astrakhan, 7 rows
rust. 2 rows astrakhan.
The decreasing continues all the way
fsom the armhole. When the astra
han rows are knitted, the decreasings
are observed when changing to astra
khan, taking care not to confuse these
with the 5th and 6th stitches being
knitted tog. 'Itoee more lots ol 1
rows rust, 2 rows aterakhan, then 7
rows .rust. The stitches now number
38. and there are 6 lots of astrakhan
from the armhole. Knit one row astra
khan and cast off on the other.
For the back the same instructions
are used as for the front.
THE SLfaKVti
Cast on 86 stitches, knit into the
back of each stitch, and knit in garter
until there are 47 rows, make 2 rows
astrakhan. Knit 10 rows garter; at
the beginning and end of the 11th row
knit 2 top. Repeat this in every suc
ceeding 6th row until there are 76
stitches, continue with these stitches
until there are 47 rows. Make 2 rows
astrakhan. Knit 39 rows rust, 2 rows
astrakhan. Knit 31 rows rust then 2
rows astrakhan. Knit 8 rows, and on
the 9th and every succeeding 6th row.
knit twice into the second and 2nd last
stitches, continuing until there are 23
rows. Then 2 rows astrakhan. 19
rows rust with tbe increasings. 2
rows astrakhan. One row rust, and
the stitches number 86. Knit 2 tog.
at the beginning and end of every al
ternate row, and continue the stripes
as in the front. The stitches number
24 at the top. Cast off as in the front.
THE BELT
With the astrakhan and No. 7
needles, cast on 18 stitches; knit into
the back of each stitch, knit in moss
stitch to the reouired length. To
make a point, knit 2 tog. each end of
every 2nd row. until 2 stitches remain.
Cast off.
THE COSSACK CAT
With the astrakhan and the No. 7
needles, cast on 86 stitches, knit into
the back of each stitch. Knit in moss
stitch for 3 in. Knit twice into every
7th stitch. Knit 2 rows moss stitch.
Knit twice into every 8th stitch and
knit 2 rows moss stitch. Cast off.
For the crown, cast on 20 stitches,
knit 2 rows in moss stitch, increase
one stitch each end of every 2nd row
3 times. Knit 4 in. in moss stitch. De
crease one stitch each end of the next
and every 2nd row. until there are 3
decreasings. Knit 2 rows and cast
off.
TO MAKE UP
Press the pieces on the wrong side
with a damp cloth.
Sew the side and sleeve seams by
back stitching, taking care to match
the stripes. When putting the sleeves
in, use' the same method, leaving a 2
In. space at the top of the left side.
Put a tinv facing at the back of this
opening, taking care sot to snow any
stitches on the right side, and not 'ging
any more of the knitted material than
in back-stitching. Sew the buttons on
at the first 4 rows of astrakhan from
the top; make loops for the first two
in rust wool; the other two are orna
mental.
To Make Up The Cap. — Mount the
crown on to a piece of ribbon 3 inches
wide and to fit the head measurement.
Sew1 the other piece on to the ribbon
at the bottotn, and stitch in place
lightly at the point where the crown
meets the brim. The whole of the
brim can be stiffened, if desired, by
mounting on canvas cut to tbe shape.
