SIR DAVID SERJEANT.
BROKEN LEG AT 98.
A REMARKABLE CAREER.
LONDON, November 10.
Sir David M. Serjeant, who is 98, bent
down to pick up an article from the
floor of his room to-day. He over-
balanced, and when he fell he broke a
leg. He is in a hospital in a critical
condition.
Sir David is a physician and surgeon,
having been educated at Cambridge
University and Guy's Hospital. He was
knighted in 1922. He has had a re-
markable career. When he went to
Australia in 1852 the voyage lasted 82
days. He became ill in Melbourne, and
was placed in a crude hospital, the
town being then of canvas. In his
ward he had a corpse on a bed each
side of him, and the nurse was drunk.
He is the only survivor of the 22 players
in the first two inter-colonial cricket
matches played. Before returning to
London in 1859, to resume his medical
training, Sir David worked as a paper-
hanger, gardener, painter, conveyancer,
and builder's laborer.
