Flood Damage In India
CALCUTTA. June 23.
Many lives were lost and thousands are homeless as the result of widespread floods in Eastern Bengal and Assam, due to seven days of incessant torren- tial rain. Many areas are completely isolated railway lines are washed away, bridges destroyed, and agricultural land inundated.
In the Himalayan foothills a down- pour of unprecedented severity caused extensive landslides, blocking roads and rivers. Villagers were forced to seek refuge in trees. There is a heavy toll of jungle life, carcases of elephants, tigers, and leopards being observed in the Bramaputra River.
