LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ELEC TIONS. The elections for representatives in the Upper House took place on Thursday last, and passed off in a quiet and orderly way. For the South-Eastern Province there were three candidates—Messrs. Buchanan (the retiring member), Levi and Woolcott, and Mr. Buchanan was re-elected by an overwhelming majority. For the North Yarra Province Mr. W. H. Roberts, solicitor, a native of Williamstown, de feated Mr. Meares, the retiring member, by 619 votes. In the North-Central Pro vince Mr. Stanbridge, the retiring mem ber, was re-elected by a majority of 847 over his opponent, Mr. Buschombe. Mr. T. Dowling defeated the retiring member, Mr. H. H. Wettenhall, for the Nelson   Province by a large majority, and for the Gippaland Province Mr. W. Pearson, the old member, was returned by a majority of nearly four to one ever his opponent, Mr. Sergeant. For the Wellington Pro vince the polling was heavy and very close, resulting in the return of Mr. H. Gore by a majority of one, the polling being-Gore 2512, Wanliss 2511. The elections did not create a great amount of interest, and very little excitementwas exhibited during the contests. The following are the returns for the South-Eastern Province: Buchanan. Levi.
