DESTRUCTION OF
PENGUINS
HOBART, Thursday.-Extensive
destruction of little blue penguins
in various parts of Tasmania lias
been reported, and investigations are
now being made with a view to en-
suring adequate protection for the
birds.
Reports had been received by thc
Field Naturalists' Club, said Mi-. M
S. R. Sharland to-day, that ' the
birds, which were wholly protected,
were being slaughtered for use as
bait for crayfish pots and marine
fishing generally. This slaughter was
on such a scale that it was feared
the birds might be wiped out.
The destruction was not confined
to little blue penguins, but also to
some unusual types which had trav-
elled northwards from the Antarctic
area and had come ashore either
to spell or moult. The Field
Naturalists' Club was taking up the
matter with the Fauna Board.
