APPOINTMENT OF
HIGH COMMISSIONER
WELCOMED IN N.Z.
Thc "New Zealand Herald" makes
the following comment on the appoint
ment of Mr. D 'Alton af the first Aus
tralian High Commissioner in New Zea
land;
"Here is a pleasing change of the
indifferent attitude too ofteu apparent
in the past on the part of Australia
to her Tasman neighbor. Sydney com
ment suggests that tho 'inescapable
logic of wartime' has made the Aus
tralian Labor Government more Empire
minded. In particular, Australia has
become conscious of the interdepend
ence of Commonwealth and Dominion
in matters of defence and, in consid
ering post-war policy, has discovered
the vital importance of securing New
Zealand 's collaboration in Pacifie aff
airs. Tho Dominion long ago realised
thc need, for closer association, and sent
her High Commissioner to Canberra
eight months ago. Tho work of Mr.
Berendscn there and of Mr. D'Alton in
Wellington should nssist the two Do
minions to pull together better than in
the past. Mr. D'Alton will be vory
welcome in.this country, where, be
neath superficial criticism, there exists
a deep and solid under-layer of good
will for Australia."
