I CLAIMS NATIVES TERRIFIED BY FLYING SAUCER 50 MILES FROM ALICE

As yet unconfirmed, but very convincing report has been received that aborigines near Alice Springs have seen a 'flying saucer' at close range. A terrified aborigine has told a story of being nearly knocked from his horse when riding over a ridge, by a strange thing which flew close to him.

The report conies from Air. Arthur Pope, who is at present on his grazing block about 100 miles south 01' Alice. Two of his abori gine workers told an amazing story of their encounter with something that Mr. Pope believes must be a 'flying saucer.' It was claimed that other natives at Santa Teresa Mission, 55 miles south, ? saw the 'saucer' and enquiries are being made througii the mis- j siou leaders. 1 The native. Sonny, told Mr. Pope that as he rode up over a ridge a ball shaped thing with a \ tail coining from the opposite dir- j ection ilew straight towards him, I but suddenly veered away and | lifted sharply. \ Heavy Wind ! Sonny claims that he could ! feel a heavy wind when_ the j thing went up. He was fright ened and made for the mission where it was said that he was j shaking with fright and unable \ to talk for a while. Mr. Pope was. informed that others saw the object. Descrip tions are consistent. They claim it had a glassy appearance, was

travelling very fast and four trails of smoke came from each side. A report was heard when the mach ine lifted into the sky from its low altitude. When this occurred, according to the stories, a large cloud of smoke was seen to appear 'nice'a large thunder cloud.' Mr. Pope says he cannot doubt the stories told by his boys. He says that another boy claims to have seen a shape like the one described by Sonny when he was with Mr. Wauchope Tilmoutli on March 15 — two days before Sonny claims to have been nearly run down by a 'saucer.' Arthur Pope points out that aborigines are fairly simple tolk about such things as 'flying saucers', yet they gave a pretty detailed description and drew an impression of what they na-l seen on the ground for him. He offers a theory that the 'things' may not he men from Ma:- or Venus, but could be in vestigating aircraft from another country of a type far in advance to those known to the general public.
