THE NEW FLAGSHIP EURYALUS.
Hobart, Saturday. — Admiral Fanshawe
took charge of H.M.S. Euryalus this
morning, the admiral's flag being lowered
on the Royal Arthur and hoisted on the
new flagship. The Royal Arthur left for
Sydney en route for England.
H.M.S. Euryalus, 12,000 tons, which has
been placed on the Australian station in
consequence of the naval agreement of
last year, is quite a new ship, and belongs
to the Cressy type of first-class
armoured cruisers. She was built by
Messrs Vickers, Maxim and Son of Barrow,
where she was launched in 1901. Her
dimensions are as follow :— Length, 440ft ;
beam,69Jft; depth, 26Jft. The displace
ment is 12,000 tons, the I.H.P. is 20,000.
and the vessel is capable of a speed of 21.6
knots. The engines are triple expan
sion, surface condensing, with four
cylinders. She is fitted with 30 Bel
ville boilers, and the coal consumption'
is about 120 tons per day. The arma
ment of the Euryalus consists of two 9 2
inch guns, twelve 6in, fourteen 12-pr,
twelve 3pr, and eight machine guns.
There are two submerged broadside tor
pedo tubes, which discharge 18in torpe
does of the latest type. The cost of the
Euryalus was £8)4,259. The ship's com
pany numbers about 750 all told.
The Royal Arthur is a first-class cruiser
of 7,708 tons displacement, and her in
dicated h.p. is 12,000. Her length is 300 ft ;
breadth, 61ft; depth, 24ft 7in. The
armament consists of one 9fin gun, twelve
6in| seventeen 6-pr., 3 Q.F., and seven
machine guns and four torpedo tubes. Her
speed is 19.7 knots.
The name of the new flagship, Enryalns,
is pronounced with the accent on the y.
Euryalus is a Greek word, meaning
' broad nail,' and was the name of one ' of
the hills in the neighborhood of Syracuse,
which was the scene of fighting between
the Athenians on the one side and tbe
Spartans and Syracusans, in 415 B.C.
