THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. Lovely weather was tbhe experience here right through the Christmas boli. days, and is still with us in Portland. The twiwa has been visited by many hundreds-thousands one might say-of vtisitors, and we venture to assert that the outing bas been one of pleasant enjoy ment generally. The sea has been like glass, and boating in various forms largely indulged in, Fishing has engaged the attention of many, with the usual varying results of catches from largesto very small, Bathing, of course, was very general, while paddling was equally as popular with at least the younger portion, The numerous picturesque spots have proved pleasant recreation for the lover of the brush or pencil, while visits, by road to other pleasure resorts in the vicinity have been freely indulged in. The shops in the town were not so well dressed this year as is the general rule, still creditable displays of goods were made in most, On Christmas Eve the streets were well filled, but through the spread of business places to Percy street, Julia street was relieved of a good deal of the big push of past occasions, The Portland Band rendered a very choice programme, which practically closed the outing for that night, as before 11.3o the streets were almost.deserted.
