SOMERSET. NORTH QUEENSLAND.
The small township of Somerset, situate
almost on the northernmost point of the
Australian continent, is the mission station
on the main land of Australia of those who
have from time to time ventured on the
dangerous duty of carrying civilisation across
Torres Straits to New Guinea. From its
position as the nearest Australian township
to the New Guinea coast, Somerset possesses
many advantages, and is likely to become a
place of some importance should the gold
discoveries in New Guinea turn out successful.
