There was one false start, owing to the jockeys
having simultaneously set- their horses going,
without waiting for the accustomed signal ; the
fl-tg in advance remaining up, they pulled up
after they had gone the best part of a distance,
and returned to hear the agreeable tiJings that
they were one and all to be reported. This mis-
hap was the more unlucky, as the horses got ofT
capitally ; better, indeed, than in the actual
start. Having been once more brought up to
the scratch, the word was given, and they went
off like a flash of lightning. The instant they
were beyond thc post Flatcatcher and Assault
rushed to the front, the former leading for a few
strides, and then giving place to Assault, who
cut along at the top of his speed, Surplice and
Justice to Ireland following Flatcatcher, Cane-
zou lying up with them, Sponge next, and in the
rear Cannibal and Escape. Assault led the van
to the rise of the hill, and there resigned in toto,
Flatcatcher going with a great lead at a severe
pace, followed by Justice to Ireland, Surplice
third, and Canezou fourth. Of thc positions of
the other horses it is needless to speak, the pace
haying told so effectually upon them that they
were all completely tailed off before they reached
the mile-post. Justice to Ireland followed the
leader at an interval of at least three lengths to
the Red House turn, about the distance to which
his enemies had limited his powers ; here he was
beaten, and had nothing more to do with the
race. Surplice now took the second place, run-
ning close to the inner rails, and, with Canezou
at his quarters, followed Flatcatcher almost to
the distance, where they caught him, and, going
the fastest, beat him in a few strides. The mare
then took a lead of nearly half a length, and up
to the stand appeared to have the best of lt. At
this point, however. Surplice got to her head,
and after one of the most exciting races ever
witnessed, won in the last two or three strides,
by a neck, steel and whipcord having been most
vigorously applied to land bim. Flatcatcher was
beaten about three lengths, and he was a long
way before Escape, who was fourth. Besborough
wa« fifth, Sponge sixth, and Justice to Ireland
seventh. U.innibil and Assault cut it early,
and walked in some time after tho other horses
had passed the ch iir. The race was ru i In pre-
cisely the same time as Van Tromu's race, viz.
3min. 2Csec.
