THE ENGLISH TURF.
' STATE OF TIIK ODDS, fcc.
fFiom the Sporting Magazine, fjr August J
AT thc annual meeting of the Jockey Club, held
at Newmarket on Wednesdiy in the July meet-
ing, 1848-present Loni CSeorge Bentinck, Sir
Joseph Hawley, stewards ; and Lord Kxeler, Sir
D. Baird, Captain Hous, Col. Peel, Mr. Sloane
Stanley, Mr. Lowlhes, Mr. P. Villiers.
The accounts for the year were presented and
passed. Lord Stanley was appointed a steward
of liie Jockey Club in the place of Lord George
Bentinck, who retired by rotation.
lt was resolved-" That there should in fu-
ture be only one betting post on the Plat, that it
should be enclosed, and that only subscribers,
with the member:! of the Jockey Club and New
Rooms, should bc admitted within the enclosure.
The subscription to bc two guineas a year, or
half-a-guinea each meeting."
It was also resolved-"That the. saddling
stable nt the Ditch should be railed off, so as to
prevent the crowd of spectators from interfering
with thc free ingress and egress of the race
horses, (heir trainers, and riders."
The Committee of Management of the Ben-
tinck Pond was appointed, lt being necessary
that two of the last year's committee should re-
tire, it was agreed thal the two to be re-elected
should bo chosen by lot, which was doue, ami
tue committee appointed as under : -

Tho Derby for IS50 has ctcsed with 209 su
scribers.and the Oiks with 131 subscribers.
UKATII or TUE REVEREND LUKE DE.VNIS.
This gentleman, well known as a most succès
ful breeder of thorough-bred stock, died at t
Railway Hotel, at York, on the Ith of h
month, to which city he had proceeded to act
one of thc judges at the Royal Agricultural S
ciety's Show. Mr. Dennis, amongst othci
was thc breeder of Beverlac, the Arab, Hig
field, Routh, the Abbot of Meus, ftc, Sec., ar
latterly kept quite a reservoir at Meus Abbe
from which Mr. Green supplied himself wi
young ones and good ones. Mr. Dennis's nar
was but little known in print, his horses bein
generally entered in the name of John Scott,
that such as remain to be brought to the han
mer will not sutler in value from b'eing out
their engagements.
Mr. Urinkald has added Christopher to Ii
string, Colonel Peel purchased D^cia of Lo:
Spencer, and Lord Albemarle sold llodulnhus
the Honourable Sidney Hcrbtrt.
In consequence of the continued illness
Lord Stradbroke's private trainer, Ludlow, h
lordship's horses have been removed lo Newraai
ket, and put under the care of tho elder Sti
phenson.
The Lord Chief Baron was engaged the other
day in a curious case at Maidstone, between Mr.
Stebbings, plaintiff aud Mr. Coyle, defendant;
both parties, according to the report, "well
known upon the turf," The claim was for £700,
balance on a twelve hundred and odd bill given
chiefly in payment of betting debts.-. The argu-
ment was "a plump contradiction" as to whether
this said balance had been paid up, and, like the
famous kissing cause at Dartmouth," showed
some awful perjury one way or the other." As
however, the jury by direction gave the plaintiff
all he asked, we may fairly presume Mr. Coyle
and Co. did not get that credit from the court he
himself enjoyed from Mr. Stebbing, and his wit-
ness suffered for in the insolvent court.
Never, certainly, has the St. Leger command
ed so little interest at such a season as during
the past month ; thd two unequivocal defeats
however, of Surplice at Goodwood may make it
again an open and a betting race. Thc state of
the course, no doubt, will be counted much on
in bringing him back again, but we question
greatly whether he will forget his performances
at home in time for Doncaster, The Thursday's
race for " the Racing" would seem to say not.
The other public exhibition connected with the
Leger has been of a more satisfactory characte
to those venturing on it. Justiceto IrelaiN
having appeared at Newmarket with almost a:
much eclat as Iiis previous doings elicited fron
his dear friends-in not always green Erin ; ii
fact, he may be written as the only horse rcallj
backed during thc last few weeks, aud all along
with a rising look, which no doubt will now in'
crease. Springy Jack, though he holds his own
does not escite that general interest one rnigh
imagine he should ; we shall keep to ¡lim yet
though, for he ia a horse "for a' that." If \v«
wished for a good illustration of what » "run ol
luck" meant, we might take Lord Eglinton'* ca-
reer since he won the Leger last ye:-.r. In good
truth he seems to have the bas in his hand, anil
to shake out the'prizes justwhenhe wants them.
For the Derby of neil time there is at present a
bit of a query touching which should be first
favourite of two horses who have both won two
or three races each in a canter, and both the pro-
perty of Lord Eglinton ! If that doesn't look
like having the game in your hand, we should
hardly',knowhov/tohopeforit. How famously,too,
some would play it to suit their own market!
With Lord Eglinton, however, the public have
this one gratifying certainty, that, take which
they may, The Dutchman, or Elthiron, if they
have had judgment enough or luck enough to
select tho better, there will be no fear but of his
doing the beat for them. After this stable, we
may name Honeycomb as having been in most
indeed, in very greatforce up to Goodwood, and
nat even gone quite out yet, despite his defeat by
Colonel Peel's colt Tadmoor, with whom he 11
now quoted at "even odds." For our own part,
we are inclined to think the strength of Kent's
stable- has been much overrated since Epsom,
and that further trials in public will not afford
to complete a contradiction to th« Goodwood
mud-larks as may be expected. Borneo, Uriel,
and Nunuyktrk have all been backed for some
money, and many others, it will be seen, fa-
vourably inquired after. Mr. Green's horses
are among them ; he seems to hive withdrawn
lils "company" after thc failure of his great
"star," Garrick, lathe character he essayed on
the Liverpool boards.
