Skipton Doesn't Look

Spring Winner

MELBOURNE, Saturday.

! Lost year's V.R.C. Derby

and Melbourne Cup winner Skipton will need to improve considerably to have a chance in this year's big spring races. Together with W.A. horse Hestia he failed badly in to- day's Mentone Cup.

I Hestia was a 9/2 favorite.

Rex Buzz began smartly and after being in a handy position all the way he managed to stall off the fast-finishing Velocity to score by a length with rank out- sider Lucille a close third.

Sir Thomas and Colonus had a tussle for the lead and si:: fur- longs from home there was little between these two, then coming Fairway Freddy and Rex Buzz, who was going very easily. Near- est of the others at this stage were Lucille, Marcius, Hullabaloo and Velocity.

Both Skipton and Hestia were toiling along in the rear.

Sir Thomas and Colon -ยป con- tinued to cart the field along for the next three furlongs, but turn- ing for home Rex Buzz's rider Ol- sen drove the Buzzard gelding to the front and he quickly had the

race won.

Over the final furlong Velocity came home with a terrific burst of speed, but it was too late and Rex Buzz had a length to spare at the post.

Lucille surprised punters by hanging on well to take third

money.

As he will appreciate a longer journey, Velocity is a definite pos- sibility in the Melbourne Cup this

year.

High Road had many backers, but he was never going like a winner and will need to improve if he is to have a chance in the Melbourne Cup.

Rex Buzz was backed for a lot of money at 6's.

SKIPTON, who is o great stable pet and is here shown picking up an attendant's hat, is in disgrace following

yesterday's Mentone Cup failure.
