RUSSIANS AND GERMANS

A Remarkable Armistice

LONDON. Saturday.

A Russian official message says:     'In the region of Tirul swamp we took the offensive and dislodged the enemy, taking some prisoners, but withdrew under German pressure. "We ad- vanced a mile in the direction of

Kalngen, but fell back before counter- attacks. General Ivanhkevitch, who   led the first line, was wounded, but remained at his post."

Rome advices from Petrograd re-   port great German reinforcements on the Riga front Under Hindenburg's personal direction. Berne states that   the Swiss frontier contiguous to Ger- many remains rigorously closed.

Packs of hungry wolves infest the Polesie front, and the soldiers are beating them off with machine guns. In some cases Germans joined Rus- sians in fighting the wolves. Recently the Russo-Germans suspended a hot encounter and organised a joint hunt to drive off the wolves. Afterwards they returned to their trenches. There was no treachery on either side.
