MILK SUBSIDY
KEEPING
PRICE DOWN
MELBOURNE.--A rise in
the price of milk would be
inevitable if the Common
wealth Government decided
to lift its subsidy on milk,
the Prime Minister (Mr.
Chifley) said yesterday.
THE Government would shortly
.review its payment of the ms'
subsidy, which it had fixed because
it was interested in the nutritional
aspect of milk as well as pri,:c
stabilisation.
On Tuesday the secretary of the
Milk Producers' Association (Me.
L. L Webster) asked that the milk
subsidy, averaging 3d a gallon. be.
removed and control of price-tixi.d
reptored to the Milk Board.
If this were done there might ha
a "bic jump" in milk prices. Mr.
Chifley said.
