KILTED SKIRT
A Dainty and Useful Jumper for a
Small Girl
In a few weeks your little daughter will feel the need of a
lightweight jumper over her summer frocks. The instructions given
below are suitable for such a jumper, which would also be found
very useful for wear with a kilted skirt.
Materials.—5oz. 4-ply wool, one pair
No. 9 knitting needles, 4 No. 12 needles,
pointed at both ends.
Measurements.—Width around un-
der-arm, 27 inches. Length from
shoulder, 16 inches.
Abbreviations.—K., knit; p., purl;
tog., together.
The Back
Using two No. 12 needles cast on
SS stitches. Work three inches of rib
bing (k. 2, p. 2). Change to No. 9
needles, and begin pattern. Cast on
one stitch.
Row 1.-- K 1, k 3 times into the
next stitch (once into front, once into
back, once into front), repeat front
throughout row-flnishing with k 1.
Row 2.--* K. 1, p. 3 tog., repeat from
* throughout r .w--finishing with k 1.
Row 3-Knit. Row 4.-Purl. Repeat
these four rows 16 times. Work rows
1 and 2. Now shape for armhole, on
the 3rd and 4th rows of pattern. Cast
off four stitches at the beginning of
the next two rows, then k 2 tog. once
at each end of the needle on the next
and each alternate row until 73
stitches remain. Continue working in
pattern until armhole measures 6½,
inches.
Work 25 stitches, cast off 23 stitches,
work 25. On these 25 stitches shape
none Help
the left shoulder, casting of five
stitches at the armhole end at the be
ginning of each row for five times.
Join wool at neck end of the other
shoulder stitches, and work in the
Same way.
The Front
Work as for the back until armhole
measures three inches, then shape for
the neck. Work 29 stitches, cast off 15,
work 29.
Decrease once at the neck end of the
next four alternate rows, then work
without decreasing until armhole mea
sures 6½. in. Shape shoulder in the
same way as the back shoulder. Join
wool at the neck end of the other
shoulder stitches, and work in the
same way.
With two No. 12 needles cast on 72
stitches. Rib (k 2, p 2) for 12 rows.
Change to No. 9 .,needles, increase up to
79 stitches by k 2 into every ninth
stitch along the row.
Purl back and work in the pattern
for 3in., decreasing one stitch at both
ends of the needle after each inch (85
stitches).
Cast off two stitches at the beginning
of every row until 25 stitches remain.
Cast off. Sew up shoulder seams.
Lastly, to make the dainty round
collar.
With four No. 12 needles pick up
140 stitches. Rib (k 1, p 1) for 10 rows.
Change to No. 9 needles and rib (k 2,
p 2) for 14 rows. Knit one round,
purl one round, knit round, purl round,
and cast off loosely.
Sew in sleeves and sew up underarm
seams. This jumper does not require
pressing.
