Bright Stripes for Sports Wear.—Beware "Tennis
Face."—Quick Steps in the Slow Fox Trot
SMART FOR SPORT
Bright Jumper Suit
This really smart sports or walking
suit presents no difficulties to the aver-
age knitter. The materials required
are 1lb. Beehive (or Paton's super)
Scotch fingering wool, 3-ply—the ori-
ginal was worked with 11 ozs. red
(shade 197), 2 ozs. navy (shade 586),
and 3 ozs. fawn (shade 511). Two No.
8 knitting needles, ½ yard sateen, ¾
yard elastic.
Measurements:—Jumper — Length
from top of shoulder, 26ins. Width
all round at underarm, 39ins. Length
of sleeve from underarm (with cuff
turned up), 17½ ins. skirt-width all
round at lower edge (when pleated),
42 ins. Length as required. Work
at a tension to produce 7 stitches to
the inch, measured over the plain,
smooth fabric. The skirt, back—Us-
ing the red wool, cast on 130 stitches.
1st row—K 2, * P 1, K 1, repeat from *
to the end of the row. Repeat the
1st row three times. 5th row—Knit
plain. 6th row—K 1, purl to the last
stitch, K 1. Repeat these two rows
until the work measures 18 inches
from the commencement, ending with
a purl row. Cast off.
The Front.—Using the red wool, cast
on 228 stitches. Work exactly as
given for the back.

The Jumper, Back.—Using the navy
wool, cast on 126 stitches.
1st row.—K. 2, * P. 1, K. 1, repeat
from. * to the end of the row.
Repeat 1st row 15 times. Break off
the navy wool. .loin in the fawn.
Proceed as follows:—
1st row.—Knit plain.
2nd row.—K. 1, purl to the last
stitch, K. 1.
Repeat these two rows, working in
the stripes as follows:—
Work 6 more rows in fawn, 48 rows
in navy, 16 rows in red, 8 in navy, 32
in red, 16 in fawn. Continue in fawn,
casting off 4 stitches at the beginning
of each of the next two rows.
Decrease once at each end of the
needle in the next and every alter-
nate row until 104 stitches remain,
ending with a purl row.
Break off the fawn wool. Join in
the red.
Continue decreasing at each end of
the needle in every alternate row un-
til 96 stitches remain, ending with a
purl row.
Break off the red wool, Join in the
fawn.
Continue in plain, smooth fabric
without shaping until the work mea-
sures 25 inches from the commence-
ment, ending with a purl row.
Shape for the shoulders as follows:
1st row—Knit plain to the last 8
stitches, turn.
2nd row—Purl to the last 8 stitches,
turn.
3rd row—Knit plain to the last 16
stitches, turn.
4th row—Purl to the last 16 stitches,
turn.
5th row—Knit plain to the last 24
stitches, turn.
6th row.—Purl to the last 24 stit-
ches, turn.
7th row—Knit plain to the last 33
stitches, turn.
8th row—Purl to the last 33 stitches,
turn.
9th row.—Knit plain to the end of
row. Cast off.
The Front.—Using tile navy wool,
cast on 126 stitches.
Work exactly as given for the back
until 104 stitches remain, ending with
a purl row.
Break off tile fawn wool. Join In
the red. Proceed as follows:—
1st row—K. 1, K. 2 tog., K. 49, cast
on 18, turn.
2nd and alternate rows—K. 1, purl
to the last stitch. K. 1.
3rd row.—K. 1, K. 2 tog., K. 66.
5th row.—K. 1, K. 2 tog., K. 65.
7th row—K. 1, K. 2 tog., K. 64.
8th row—K. 1, purl to the last
stitch, K. 1.
Break off the red wool. Join in
the fawn.
Continue In plain, smooth fabric for
3¼ inches ending with a plain knitted
row.
In the next row K. 1. P. 6, cast off 22,
purl to the last stitch. K. 1, work on
the last 37 stitches as follows:—Con-
tinue in plain, smooth fabric, increas-
ing once at the end of the needle in
every plain knitted row until 31 stitch-
es remain.
Work two rows without shaping.
Shape for the shoulder as follows:
1st Row.—K. 1, purl to the last 8
stitches, turn.
2nd Row.—Knit plain to the end of
the row.
3rd Row.—K. 1, purl to the last 16
stitches, turn.
4th Row.—Knit plain to the last 3
stitches, iincrease once in the next
stitch, K. 2.
5th Row.—K. 1, purl to the last 24
stitches, turn.
6th Row.—Like the 4th row.
7th Row.—K. 1, purl to the last stitch
K. 1. Cast off. Join in the wool
and work on the seven stitches which
were left, decreasing once at the be-
ginning of the needle in every plain
knitted row until all the stitches are
worked off. Fasten off.
Using the red wool, cast on 18 stitch-
es and work across the stitches which
were left.
Continue to correspond with the first
front until the neck is reached, endlng
with a purl row.
In the next row K. 7, cast oft 22
stitches, knit plain to the end of the
row.
Continue on the last 37 stitches, de-
creasing once at the beginning of the
needle in every plain knitted now until
31 stitches remain.
Work three rows without shaping.
Shape for the shoulder as follows:
1st Row.—Knit plain to the last 8
stitches, turn.
2nd and Alternate Rows.—Purl to the
last stitch, K. 1.
3rd Row.—K. 1, Increase once in the
next stitch, knit plain to the last 16
stitches, turn.
5th Row.—K. 1, increase once in the
next stitch, knit plain to the last 24
stitches, turn.
6th Row.—Purl to the last stitch, K.
1. Cast off. Join in the fawn wool
and work on the seven stitches which
were left, decreasing once at the end
of the needle in every plain knitted
row until all the stitches are worked
off. Fasten off.
The Sleeves.—Using the red wool, cast
on 46 stitches.
Work In plain, smooth fabric, cast-
ing on 2 stitches at the end of every
row until there are 90 stitches on the
needle. Work 6 rows without shap-
ing.
Next row. K. 1, * K. 2 tog., K.
9, repeat from * to the last stitch, K. 1.
Work 3 inches without shaping, end-
ing with a purl row.
In the next row K. 1, * K. 2 tog., K.
8, repeat from * to the last stitch,
K. 1.
Work 3 inches without shaping, end-
ing with a purl row.
In the next row K. 1, 7 K. 2 tog.,
K. 7, repeat from * to the last stitch,
K. 1.
Work 3 inches without shaping, end-
ing with a purl row.
In the next row K. 1, * K. 2 tog.,
K. 6, repeat from * to the last stitch,
K. 1.
Work 3 inches without shaping, end-
ing with a purl row.
In the next row * K. 10, K. 2 tog.,
5. repeat from * to the last stitch,
Kc. 1.
Work 3 inches without shaping, end-
ing with a purl rosw.
In the next row * K. 10, K. 2 tog.,
repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, K.
2. Proceed as follows:—
1st Row.—K. 2, * P. 1, K. 1, repeat
from * to the end of the row.
Repeat the 1st row for five Inches.
Cast oft.
Work another sleeve in the same
manner.
The Collar.-—Using the red wool, cast
on 34 stitches.
1st Row.—K. 2, P. 1, K. 1, repeat
from * to the end of the row.
Repeat the 1st row seven times.
9th Row.—K. 2, (P. 1, K. 1), three
times, cast off 10 (P. 1, K. 1) eight
times.
10th Row.—K. 2 (P. 1, K. 1), seven
times, cast on 10 (P. 1, K. 1) four
times.
Repeat the 1st row until the work
measures 36 inches from the commence
ment. Proceed as follows:—
1st Row.—K. 2 tog., * P. 1, K. 1, re-
peat from * to the end of the row.
2nd Row.—K. 2, * P. 1, K. 1, repeat
from * to the last 2 stitches, K. 2
tog.
Repeat these two rows until all the
stitches are worked off. Fasten off.
To Make up the Jumper Suit.—With
a damp cloth and hot Iron press care-
fully. Sew up the side, shoulder, and
sleeve seams. Sew In the sleeves, plac-
ing seam to seam. Turn back, press,
and sew in position the facings at the
neck opening. Sew the collar In posi-
tion round the neck, fixing the end with
the slot to the left side and with the
slot nearest the neck, leaving the point-
ed end hanging from the right side.
Sew up the side seams of the skirt.
Press in position three pleats at the left
side of the skirt. Press in position
three pleats at the left side of the front.
.loin a piece of sateen to the skirt,
make a hem at the top and thread
with elastic the required size of the
waist.
