THE ADELAIDE BOWLING CLUB.
For some time past the members of the
Adelaide Bowling Club have been considering
the advisability of improving their
green, which is situated at the rear of Government
House. The parade-ground and
its surroundings have lately been improved
beyond recognition, and the club's holding
is in every way in keeping with the artistic
character of the domain. Their accommodation,
however, is not equal to requirements.
Now that the club has become
firmly established, and the membership increased,
the clubhouse and rinks are inadequate.
The recent visit of our players to
the other States, and the establishment of
inter-State games, renders it necessary
that the club should make a forward move,
and this will be done as early as possible.
The stumbling-block has been the condition
of the lease, which is at present so insecure
that the members do not care to expend
money in laying down additional rinks and
building a suitable clubhouse. The rinks,
which were laid down by the Superintendent
of Public Buildings (Mr. Owen Smyth),
are all that can be desired for the game,
but they are not numerous enough for the
players. Recently representatives of the
club waited upon the Premier with a view
of securing a longer and more secure lease
of the ground, so that members could be
justified in incurring a substantial expenditure.
The Government readily realised
that the erection of an ornamental club-
house and the laying of additional rinks
would materially improve the aspect of that
portion of the domain which the Superintendent
of Public Buildings has done so
much to beautify, and Mr. Holder has promised
that on condition that £400 is expended
the club should be given a lease of 21
years, and the ground should be dedicated
for the purpose of bowls. At a meeting of
members of the eldb on Saturday it was
decided that an endeavor should be made
to comply with the conditions set out by
the Government. Various suggestions for
raising money were made. One is that additional
£5 debentures should be issued,
another that the present debenture-holders
be asked, to convert, their stock into shares,
and form a limited liability company, to
which the active players of the club should
all subscribe. All agreed to take either debentures
or shares, and the meeting was adjourned
until Thursday, May 2, so that the
committee may submit a definite scheme.
With the opening of the new season there
is every prospect of the club members having
their wish fulfilled, and that when
teams journey from other States they will
be accommodated in a more fitting manner
than has been possible in the past.
