Atomic Pile
Welcomed
The announcement
that Backy's Bay, near
Whyalla, was the likely
site for the first indus-
trial atomic pile in the
Southern Hemisphere was
welcomed yesterday in Port
Augusta and Whyalla.
The Mayor of Port
Augusta (Mr. Riches, MP),
said that the pile would
aid decentralisation of in-
dustry.
However, atomic power
generation might supplant
that from coal, substantially
decreasing coal haulage and
employment at the Curlew
Point power stations.
The chairman of the
Whyalla Town Commission
(Mr. C. L. Ryan) said atom
pile construction workers
would probably make Why-
alla their headquarters.
The official name of
Backy's Bay was changed to
Fitzgerald Bay in 1937. The
change commemorates ef-
forts of Mr. J. Fitzgerald,
formerly Labor member of
the State Parliament for
Port Pirie, to have SA iron
ore treated in this State.
