First 'Kangaroo' Scenes Filmed In Sydney
SYDNEY. Nov. 12.
Sydney people had their first glimpse of a Holly wood star before the cam era in person when the opening
scenes of the 20th Century Fox film 'Kangaroo' were made at the week-end. The scenes were shot in the Rocks district near Miller's Point, close to the Harbor Bridge. t - Peter Lawford, who has been brought to Australia to play the male lead in the film, was the centre of attraction for a crowd of several hundred people. to see oniy a lew minutes oi actual shooting. There were whistles and ad miring calls from teen-aged girls and youths when Lawford made his appearance before the camera. The company took 11 trucks of equipment to the Rocks dis trict yesterday for the opening scenes. They arrived there at 9.30 ajn., but it was 5.30 pjn. aefore the first scenes were filmed. Another Hollywood actor, Richard Boone. also took part in the opening scenes. Tonight Jack CMalley former Australian heavyweight boxing champion, who is a stand-in for Finlay Currie bad an unenviable role. He hac to fall down a set of half a dozen stairs five times before he satisfied the director, Lewis Milestone. For his part O*Malley had to wear a wig. He wore elbow and knee pads to protect himself in his falls. Shooting of various scenes in and around Sydney will be continued this week, after which the company will ro on location to SA. Tomorrow the company will seek about 100 men as extras to play the parts of players and spectators in a big two-up school. The scene showing the school in action will be filmed on Tuesday and all the players chosen wil receive two guineas for their efforts.
