COMMENDATION. Fire on s.s. Katoomba. CANBERRA, Jan 25.-Three able seamen and a first-class mate of the ss Katoomba voluntarily formed a fire party following an explosion on the ship. They were: J. S. Burns, first mate, of Victoria. and Able Seamen J. P. Shearer, J. W. Thrus sell and J. F. Robertson, all of NSW. The fire resulted from an explosion caused by the falling of a sling of projectiles when ammunition was; being landed from the Katoomba at' Port Moresby In August,. 1943. The fire party ran considerable risks when they went below as there was still much ammunition in the hold. Yesterday the Acting Governor General (Sir Winston Dugan) an nounced that they had been awarded 1a commendation.
