NotLco is hereby given, that a circular stone tower, one hundred and forty-live feet high, and painted white, has been erected for a light-house on the hill near Cape Wickham, at the north end of King's Island, in Bass's Straits, and from which a fired while light will be exhibited on or after the first day of November next. The light is of a first-class eatadioptric descrip tion, at an elevation of two hundred and eighty feet above the level of the sea. and, in clear weather, will be visible from the deck of a vessel about eight leagues on an are of tile horizon to seaward from S S W 3 W romud the compass northerly to E S E. The attention of mnriners is also earnestly called to the following extract from the iReport of tile Light-houso Commissioners appointed by the Go vernments of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasnania : "In advising the erection of a lighthouse on this island, the Commissioners wish to guard themselves from affording the public any reasonable suplposi tlion that this light can be at all considered in the position of a great highway light for the navigation of the Straits. 'The south coast of New Holland. at tihe western entrance of Bass's Straits, beilg free from danger, affords, in their opinion, the safest shore for the prudent mariner to approach ; and they conceive that tihe light on King's Island is only to be regarded as a beacon for warning navigators of danger, rather than as a leading light to a great thoroughfaire." Tihe following bearings were taken in 1855, by Commander Ross, It.N, from the site of the light. house : Western extremity of IHarbinger Reef, N G9 o W t distance, 41 miles. Eastern extremity, N 540 o WV i distance, 4 miles. Navnrino Shoal, N 341 o E; distance, 21 miles. Southern extremity of New Year's Island, S 39 O 1V i distance. 9 miles.
