Benevolent Fund Loan Exhibition.
THE Committee for carrying out the
above object are now in a position
to state that a sufficient number of valuable,
ornamental and curious articles
have been placed at their disposal to
enable them to form a most interesting
exhibition, but they are still desirous, if
possible, to add to the Exhibits, and
those who are disposed to assist in the
undertaking by contributions, are solicited
to inform the Secretary as early as
practicable what articles they intend to
furnish in order that arrangements may
be made for the required space.
The Committee now more especially
desire to obtain specimens of natural and
manufactured productions of the Colony for
example: minerals, gums, woods,
fibres, preserved and dried fruits, olive
oil, etc, and those who may be able to
furnish such articles are earnestly invited
to do so, as the Committee are assured
that no opportunity like the present
should be lost of directing public attention
to the many rich and valuable
natural productions of the Colony.
W. H. KNIGHT,
Honorary Secretary.
To the Electors of the
Wellington District.
GENTLEMEN- Having by my advocacy,
both in and out of the Council,
been partly instrumental in procuring
a change in our Constitution, I feel that
I should be justly open to reproach if I
shrank from the responsibility of assist-
ing to carry to a successful issue the system
of Government about to be inaugurated,
and I therefore have the honor to
offer myself as a Candidate to represent
you in the Legislative Council.
The question of education is, I believe,
the only one on which a difference of
opinion may exist between myself and
some, of those whom I still hope to call
my constituents. In a mixed population
such as ours, I am of opinion that the
undenominational system at present existing
is the only one practicable, for
whilst if affords a fair elementary education
to every child within reach of a
school, it prohibits all dogmatic religious
teaching, and only permits of the reading
such Scripture lessons as are accepted as
uncontroversial by all religious sects, and
the State thus fulfils its duty of placing
the means of education within reach of
all its children, and by making the
schools unsectarian, excludes no child
from them. In not one of the other colonies
is State aid given to purely denomi-
national schools.
I shall always give my support to those
measures having for their object local
self government, and generally speaking
I hope to be able to concur in the slight
ened policy of our present Governor.
I am in favor of the contraction of a
moderate loan for the prosecution of re-
productive public works, and also for the
introduction of a suitable class of immigrants,
should the Home Government
persist in repudiates g its agreement to
send out one free person for every convict
landed here.
I shall endeavor to procure such an alteration
in the Land Regulations as will
assimilate them to those of Victoria,
which appear to me to give equal facilities
to the Agriculturist, and the Squat-
ter, and which permit of payment for
land being made by yearly instalments.
I shall use my best exertions to promote
efficiency and economy in the public
service, and I shall keep a watchful eye
over the public expenditure. I shall also
support a Bankruptcy bill modelled on
that recently passed in England.
Should you elect me as your Representative,
I shall always try to advance the
interests of the district, but at the same
time I shall not cease to remember that
it is the duty of a Member of Council to
legislate for the good of the colony at
large, and not for the exclusive benefit of
any one portion of it.
I remain, Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
Jas. G. Lee Steere.
The tale that I relate,
This lesson seems to carry
Choose not also? a pro cr mate,
But proper time to marry.
Cowper.

their lives in contributing to render the
latter part miserable," frequently realis-
ing Spenser's description
As pale and wan as ashes was his looks.
His body leane and meagre as a rake,
And skin a 1 withered like a dried rooke.

In its relation to Married Life.
BY
DR. L. L. SMITH,
For eighteen years the leading Consulting
Medical Man in Melbourne, in all Special
Diseases, and in all Complaints incidental to
hot climates.
In this Work will be found an answer
to the question which heads this advertisement.
in the Australian Colonies,
more than in the mother country, is continually
heard the complaint, that
" young men will not marry ;" and their
conduct in abstaining from marriage, in
certain cases, is highly commendable;
for
" It is less a breach of Wedlock to part, than
still to foil and profane that Mystery of
Joy and Union, with a polluting Sadness
and perpetual Distemper/, Mitton.
Yet it cannot be disputed that the highest
degree of earthly happiness is that
yielded by the permanent enjoyments, of
the married state, for
Without our hopes, without our fears,
Without the Home that plighted love en-
dears,
Without the smile from partial Beauty won,
Oh ! what were Man a World without a
Sun.
Campbell.
It is true that many marriages prove
unhappy from there being no children,
and other causes ; but it is equally true
that the cause of unhappiness is generally
removable for of nearly every woman it
