From Monday 15th, to Saturday 21st of March,
1829, inclusive.
The subjoined, which we copy in an abridged

According to the Hobart Town Courier the esti
mated value in sterling money of exports from
Van Diemen's Land to Great Britain, British, co
lonies, and foreign states, during the past year,
1828, may be set down as, of wool, 19,108ℓ.-
oil, 7,278ℓ.- whalebone, 3,990ℓ. — wheat, 9,045ℓ.
— flour, 2,304ℓ. — live stock, 1,433ℓ. — potatoes,
1,599ℓ.— hides, 547ℓ. — seal skins, 562ℓ.— kangaroo
ditto, 372ℓ. — mimosa bark, 800ℓ.— extract of do.
48ℓ.— barilla, 140ℓ. — unenumerated, 21,031ℓ. —
total, 68,257ℓ.
The value of wheat, flour and potatoes, a great
proportion of which were exported to this Colony,
is estimated at 9,045ℓ., 2,304ℓ. and 1,433ℓ. re
spectively. These may come pretty near, though
rather likely to be over the truth than under ; but
the enumerated 21,031ℓ. makes a striking item.
This, with the above articles of colonial produc
tion, are described as having been exported in ten
vessels belonging to Great Britain, amounting to
3,140 tons, in 54 to the British colonies (chiefly
Sydney), containing 13,631 tons, and foreign
stales in 7 vessels of 2,724 tons, the whole exports
of the year from Hobart Town being sent out of
the colony in 71 vessels of 19,495 tons.
Now let us look to the schedule of imports for
the same period. These are rated as follows :—
Ironmongery, 15,169ℓ.— woollens, 9,261ℓ.—
hosiery, 2,654ℓ.— piece goods, 17,387ℓ.— malt
liquor, 8,566ℓ.- rum, 15,734ℓ. — brandy, 9,056ℓ.
- Geneva, 1,708ℓ.— wine, 12,087ℓ.— tea, 5,422ℓ.
tobacco, 7,220ℓ.- sugar, 6,109ℓ.— unenumerated
84,871ℓ..- total 195,242ℓ.
Imported from Great Britain in 32 vessels

in 10 vessels to Hobart Town of 642 tons ; total,
50 vessels of 4,521 tons.
Whilst corresponding imports are thus stated :—
Ironmongery, 1,551ℓ.— woollens. 1,444ℓ.-
hosiery, 3,015ℓ.— piece goods, 944ℓ.— malt liquor,
3,241ℓ.— rum, 2,157ℓ.— brandy, 1,468ℓ.— Gene-
va, 707ℓ.- wine, 2,591ℓ.— tea, 1,250ℓ.— tobacco,
1007ℓ.- sugar,2,124ℓ.— unenumerated, 15,783/ℓ—
total, 38,288ℓ.
Imported in 2 vessels of 381 tons from Great
Britain, in 38 vessels of 3,117 tons from Sydney,
in 12 vessels of 800 tons from Hobart Town ; total,
52 vessels of 4,498 tons.
Making the net exports from Van Diemen's
Land, 88,964ℓ., and net imports, 217,788ℓ.
Which would leave the proportion of exports to
the imports nearly about as 1 is to 2½. The whole
estimate, however, we consider as rather on the
average, as pretending to any extraordinary degree
of correctness. Such as it is however, it shews a
a degree of -precocity in the Sister Colony truly
surprising. , ^ :; , ? ???'-.
