AEROPLANE MYSTERY

FRUITLESS SEARCH IN BROKEN HILL DISTRICT REPORTED FALL IN CLOUD OF SMOKE The police at Broken Hill and many civilians searched all day on Monday without success for the aeroplane which was re ported to have come down in a column of smoke on Sunday.

Broken Hill, July 15.

After the report that an aeroplane had been seen to go down in a column of smoke, several miles from Broken Hill, shortly after noon yesterday, two

car loads of police left' here at ¥*j8 last night on fk search, to which it U said people responded as readily as they did tor the searph fgr Joan Smith, who was lost some time ago. The aeroplane was first seep by Mr*. Hupfie}d, whp was goipg tp Stephen's Creek to a cycling carnival with Mr. R. Fergiispn, Mrs. "ferp^on, and Mr. A. Eaton. The others also saw the plane later. When she first noticed it. Mrs. Hupfield remarked that it was impossible for a plane to land, among the hills. The party made enquiries at tbe carnival at Stephen's Creek whether anybody else had seen the plane, but they could find nope, and Mr. Ferguson decided temporarily to let the matter drop. When returning, however, he-decided to report the matter to the police, and search _ operations were begun.~-'' - "J -*..... She saw White smoke f&mjpg from it. and then black smoke.*' ?Enquiries made ip several directions did not reveal anything, and thoughts later turned to the Rev. L. Daniels, "the flying parson" of Wilcannia, but he conducted services at Menindie and other places along the river. Whep the police were searching last nighty two persons were found in a hut at Rpckjey Holding, but they said they bad not beard the noise of an aeroplane or seen anything like one. Mr. Keith Brougham, of Yalcowinna station, and Mr. Schmidt, overseer of pig Moupt Gipps station, helped to the searching last night. At 6.16 o'clock this morning, the search was resumed by the police and civilians, but after covering approxi mately 100 miles, no trace was found of the plane. At 6 o'clock this even ing the searchers returned. It is estimated that 100 persons and 30 cars participated in the search to-day.
