MYSTERIOUS AEROPLANE.
Perth, Dec. 21.
Mr. G. Nelson, who arrived at
Fremantle by the Koolinda to-day
and who is connected with the pearl-
ing industry at Broome, confirms
the report that a mysterious aero-
plane has been lately at Broome,
Mr. Nelson, who served as a lieu-
tenant with the Imperial forces du-
ring the war, says he saw what was
either a large aeroplane or seaplane
about the middle of November some
seven miles South-west of the
Broome lighthouse. When the lug-
ger on which he was working return-
ed to Broome ten days later and
he reported the matter to the Cus-
toms authorities. He learned that
other people had reported having
seen two strange aeroplanes on the
date in question. The general opi-
nion seemed to be that the aero-
planes were being used to smuggle
opium into Australia, and that they
had come from Java or some of the
adjacent islands.
