Cyclone at Townsville
17 Inches In an Hour
Over seventeen inches of rain
were recorded at one centre dur-
ing a cyclone storm in the Towns-
ville district, causing floods and
washouts on the railway line.
Lord Burnham
Tribute to Australia
One of the finest and most
comprehensive tributes ever paid
to Australia was that of Lord
Burnham in an address at the
Royal Colonial Institute under the
title of "Australia as I saw It."
He admitted at the outset that
it was impossible in 11 weeks
thoroughly to see, much less to
understand a continent. Austral-
ians were rightfully indignant at
summary judgments passed by
short term tourists. For some
reason or other Australia was un-
duly depreciated by world opin-
ion, chiefly because she had not
learned the American art of ad-
vertisement. Very few, other than
Australian born, realised how
good Australia was. Australia
was the finest country he had
ever seen for its size, climate and
immunity from most ills to which
humanity was heir.
