north side of the river to discuss- action necessary to have the road declared the Great Eastern Highway. Invitations will be sent to the Guildford Council and the Bassendean and Bayswater Road Boards. Mr. W. Abbett drew the attention of the board to the fact that the Lands De partment had recently refused an applica tion made by the Bassendean Road Board to have the road declared the Great Eastern Highway. The matter had origi nated with the Perth body, and he felt that sunless . some action were taken the new*road on the south Bide of the river would be developed arid all traffic diverted from the centres to the north. The old Guildford-road should be the main artery to the city, and the new road a by-pass road. The two bad bends in the old road could be straightened and tbe Bassendean bridge which carried the road over the river, had been allowed to fall into a bad state of neglect. He considered that action should be taken to have this work done and the bridge repaired, and moved that a conference of local authorities con cerned be called to discuss the matter. Mr. W. Bardon pointed out that the old road only crossed the river once and was a mile and a half shorter than the new road through Belmont. The latter crossed the Causeway and then re-crossed the river at Guildford.
