PRINCE HENRY 'OF ORLEANS.
The popular and well-travelled mem-
ber of the one Royal House of France
has succumbed at Saigon at the early
age of 34. Prince Henry was born at
Ham, near Richmond, his father, the
Duke of Chartres, then being a resi-
dent there. The reputation of the de-
ceased rested mainly on his exploring
achievements. When in 1887 he sought'
to enter St. Cyr a law was passed for-
bidding Princes of the Royal blood
from serving France in any capacity.
Without delay he began a year's voy-
age round the world, six months of
which were spent in India shooting
with his cousin, the Duke of Orleans.
In 1889 he set out on an exploration
of Thibet. Starting from Russia, he
crossed. Siberia, and traversed .Thibet.
coming out in Tonkin after an arduous
journey. He then proceeded to Cen-
tral Africa. Disembarking in the
Gulf of Aden, he went inland as far as
Harrar and Mill-Mill, and laid down
the first map of the country. In I894
he spent several months in Madagas-
car before the French occupation, and
returned to Tonkin and made his way

to the sources of the Irrawaddy. The
Prince afterwards turned his attention
to Abyssinia with a view to the improve-
ment of French interests. A few
months ago Prince Henry undertook a
journey through French Indo-China,
and it was while travelling in the region
of the frontier of Annam that he was
seized with the illness which has had
a fatal termination.
