EXPLORATION OF THE NORTH.

Disclaimer by Dr. Battye.

.Referring on baturday to the publica tion in a recent issue of 'The West Aus tralian' of particulars of a proposed ex Tjedition to the North-West, tlio Public

Librarian (Dr. J. S. Battye) said that the statement made by Mr. C. L. K. Foot that he (Dr. Battye) was prepared to act on a local committee to investigate the proposal was quite unauthorised. Dr. Battye said that some time ago M:\ 3foot had an interview with the Curator of the West Australian Museum (Mr. L. Glauert) and him on the subject and was informed that he could not hope to put a scheme of the kind indicated into opera tion unless the Government identified it self directly with it. Mr. Foot was told that the first step necessary was to place the whole scheme before tho Government and ascertain to what extent tho Govern ment was prepared to give financial support and to detail Government oilied'a to take part in the proposed expedition. Until this was done and, particularly, un til the method by which such an expedi tion was to be financed was made pertei.t ]y clear it _ was useless to proceed in the direction of forming any. committee. So fai as he (Dr. Battye) was concerned he was ' not prepared at the present staire to be a member of any proposed committee. ?'I recognise,' declared Dr. Battye, 'par- ticularly in view of recent occurrences nnd tho increasing use of aeroplanes in voyages between England and Australia that the country between Derby and Wyndham should be definitely explored and niapptvl out. Something in this connection has al ready been done by Messrs. Brockman and'C. P. Conigrave. but their informa tion after all only relates to a small por *.lon of this vast territory.'
