BABY DOLL'S OUTFIT FOR CHRISTMAS
In this article directions are given
for making a complete outfit for a 16 in. baby doll and include;
singlet, pilchers, frock, matinee jacket, bonnet, and bootees.
..Materials required: Three ounces 3 ply wool, No. 11 knitting needles, a me- dium crochet hook, three yards narrow ribbon.
The Singlet
' Using white wool, cast on 46 stitches. Work in rib of Kl.P 1, for half an inch.
Next row: * K-2, P 2, repeat from * to "
last two stitches, K 2. Repeat this row until your work measures 5 in. from the beginning. Shape for neck. Work in pattern on the flrst 14 stitches, cast off 18, work in pattern to end of row. Continue in pattern on these last 14
stitches, decreasing one stitch at neck edge every alternate row four times. Work without shaping for nine rows, finishing at neck edge. Break off wool and return to the other side. Join In wool at neck edge and work to direc- tions given for the first side, finish- ing at neck edge. Cast on 24 stitches on to the end of this needle, then work
in pattern on the 10 stitches of other - side, thus joining your work at the back- . of neck. Continue to work lu pattern on these 46 stitches for 5 1/2in. Now work in rib of K1, P 1, for half an Inch. Cast off.
Pilchers
Cast on 50 stitches, rib In 2 plain, 2 purl for eight rows. Make ribbon holes. Work eight more rows of rib- bing. Knit in moss stitch for 3 in. De- crease at each end of needle in every row 10 times. Work 14 rows without
decreasing, and then increase at each end of needle in every row 10 times.
Work straight up, making this side to - match the one you have just finished. Sew up side seams as far as decreas- ings. Thread with ribbon, and trim with rosebuds. Do three rows of
double crochet around legs and finish ? with picot edge.
Frock
Begin at the lower edge of the front and cast on 90 stitches. Knit in moss stitch for l 1/ in. Knit in the same pattern as the bonnet and booties, for about 7in. Increase at the waist to 50 stitches. Make ribbon holes; Knit 1*, make 1, knit 2 together, repeat from * to end of row. Knit for l 1/2in. in moss
stitch and then cast on 12 stitches at the beginning of next two rows for the sleeves. Work for 1 1/2 in, and then knit 30. Cast off 14, knit 30, knit to and fro on the last 23 stitches for 1 1/2 in. Cast on 7 stitches at the neck and knit on all these stitches until the sleeve ls the same width as the sleeve at the front. Cast off the sleeve and work for 1 1/2 in. Leave these stitches and start on the other shoulder. Make lt exactly the same as the one that you have just finished. Begin the skirt at
the bottom and cast on 90 stitches. : Make it exactly as you made the front as far as the waistline. Reduce at waist, make ribbon holes, and graft the skirt to either side of the bodice. Press carefully. Sew up side seams. Do two rows of double crochet around neck and sleeves: Thread with ribbon at the waist and neck.
Bonnet
Cast on 52 stitches and knit In moss stitch for eight rows.
Knit In pattern. 1st row: Knit 2nd row: Purl. 3rd row: Knit 1, knit 2 together to the end of the row, knit 1. 4th row: Knit 1, * knit 1, pick up stitch In between next two stitches, re-
peat from * to end of row. Repeat the last four rows five times. Shape the crown by knitting the 9th and 10th
stitches together all along the row. . Next' row plain. Knit 9th and 10th stitches together all along the row. Next row plain. Knit 7th and 8th stitches together all along the row. Next plain. Knit the 6th and 7th stitches together all along the row. ^Next row plain. Keep on in this
fashion until there are only about 10 stitches left on your needle. Break wool and thread lt to a darning needle.
Slip all the stitches from the knitting needle with the darning needle and pull it Into a circle at the back. Sew it up neatly. Sew the bonnet together for
about lin.
Bootees
Cast on 30 stitches, rib for six rows, 1 plain, 1 purl. Knit in pattern. 1st row: Knit. 2nd row: Purl. 3rd row: Knit 1, knit 2 together to end of row, knit 1. 4th row: Knit 1,* knit 1. pick up the stitch in between, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat last-rows three times. Knit 20, turn. Knit 10. Knit to and fro on the last 10 stitches
for about 1 1/2 in. Pick up stitches down either side of instep and knit all stitches into one row. Knit six plain rows and then knit two together at each end ot needle and also in the centre of the foot for four rows. Knit two together at each end ot needle in every row four times. Cast off.
Matinee Jacket
Cast on 72 stitches and knit in moss stitch for lin. Work in pattern as you did for the frock and bonnet:
1st row of pattern: * Knit 2, make 1, knit 3, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over, knit 2, make 1,
knit 2, and repeat from * to end of row.
2nd row: Purl. Repeat the last two rows until tho work measures 5 in. from the beginning. Decrease for the waist to 60 stitches, and make ribbon holes like this: * Knit 1, make 1, knit 2 to- gether, and repeat from * to end of
row.
Work 1in. in moss stitch and then cast on 14 stitches for the sleeves at the beginning of the next two rows. Knit for 2in. and then cast off 12 stitches in the centre at the back of the neck. Knit for eight rows and then cast on eight stitches at the neck edge. Knit until the sleeve is the same length as the sleeve at the back. Cast off 14
sleeve stitches. Knit for 1 in. to match the back. Make ribbon holes and leave these stitches. Make the other side of the front to match the one you have just finished.
For the Fronts: Cast on 47 stitches and knit in pattern to match the back as far as the waist, leaving a border of five moss stitches on the front edges. Graft the fronts of either side of the waistline. Sew up side seams and sleeve seams. Crochet ribbon holes and a picot edge all round neck. Work a few hand-made rosebuds here and there on the front borders. Thread with ribbon. Do two rows double crochet around sleeves.
