WAR DEAD

Duke Opens Park

Two war memorials were opene in the Sydney area during th week-end-one by the Governor General, the Duke of Gloucester the other by the State Governor Lieutenant-General Northcott.

At Auburn on Saturday, tb Governor-General opened a wa memorial park and reserve.

Yesterday, General Northcott un- veiled a stone cenotaph at St. John's Church of England, Ashfield.

The Town Clerk of Auburn, Mr. T. Mooney, said he believed the re- serve was the first war memorial park in Australia to be opened since the

war.

Thc Governor-General also opened bowling greens in the park, bowling the first jack.

At Ashfield, General Northcott emphasised the need for all sections of the community to combine in help- ing the returned Serviceman to resume a satisfactory civil life.

He said that many youths who went overseas returned as men who had carried responsibility. They re- turned to their homeland only to dis- cover their way beset with difficulties,

The ceremony was attended by Navy, Army, and Air Force repre- sentatives, clergy, and local body

delegates.
