GEORGE KNOWLES
MEMORIAL PRIZE
The Council of the Canberra
University College has accepted
a sum of money from Lady
Knowles, the income to provide
a prize to serve as a memorial
to the late George Shaw Knowles.
The prize will be awarded to
that student of the Canberra
University College proceeding to
the degree of Bachelor of Laws
who has, in the year immediately
preceding that in which the
award is made, done the best
academic work.
In announcing the establish-
ment of the prize the Chairman
of the Council (Sir Robert Gar-
ran) said the Council was very
grateful to Lady Knowles
in making the gift said that be-
cause her husband was always
so interested in the College, she
would like his name associated
with it in this way. It was fitting
and proper that there should be
some permanent memorial to the
distinguished services which Sir
George rendered to the College.
Sir George Knowles was Soli-
citor-General of the Common-
wealth from 1932 to 1946 and
was prominent in cultural and
educational activities in Can-
berra. The Canberra University
College was one of his chief inter-
ests and he was appointed to the
first Council in 1930, holding
office continuously until the date
of his resignation in 1946, to be-
come Australian High Commis-
sioner in South Africa.
