Two Inquiries Into Aircraft
Crash On Beach
BRISBANE, Mon. - Two inquiries - one by the
R.A.A.F. and another by the Civil Aviation De-
partment - will be made into the crash of the R.A.A.F.
Wirraway on Maroochydore Beach on Saturday when
three children were killed and 14 other people injured.
The R.A.A.F. investigations will be
made by an R.A.A.F. Court of In-
quiry consisting of senior officers.
The pilot and navigator were
brought from Nambour Hospital to
Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital,
Brisbane, last night.
The pilot, Flt-Lt. Herbert
Thwaites, is now off the dangerously
ill list, and Sgt. G. M. Neill's condi-
tion is reported to be satisfactory.
The only victim still on the
dangerously ill list in Nambour Hos-
pital is Mrs. Linda Iris Hale (39),
of Finsbury St., Newmarket, who
suffered a fractured right collar-
bone, dislocated right shoulder, frac-
tured ribs and shock.
The funerals of the three child
victims will be held tomorrow.
Federal officials said in Melbourne
today that the Commonwealth ac-
cepted liability for injury or damage
through service activities and would
compensate those injured.
Special consideration would have
to be given in the case of the next
of kin of the three children because
children had never been killed be-
fore in an R.A.A.F. accident.
