Request to British
Government
Major-General Ernest Ker Squires,
one of Britain's most distinguished
Staff Officers, was yesterday selected
by Cabinet for appointment as In-
spector-General of Australian Mili-
tary Forces.
The selection was made from a
panel of names submitted to the
Commonwealth by the British Gov-
ernment.
Information is being awaited from
Britain to determine whether Major-
General Squires can be spare for
two years. It is desired that he shall
not only reorganise the forces in ac
cordance with modern developments
but that he should be available to im-
plement any recommendations which
lie may make to the Federal auth-
orities.
No reply had been received from
the British Government yesterday.
Providing the services of Major-
General Squires can be made avail-
able for two years, one or more sen-
ior staff officers of the Australian
Military Forces, probably Major-
General Lavarack, who is Chief-of
the-General-Staff, will be sent to Eng-
land to secure a thorough knowledge
of modern army developments. He
would then return to Australia to
fill the post of Inspector-General.
Major-General Squires has a dis-
tinguished war record in France and
Mesopotamia. In addition, he has
served at army headquarters in In-
dia and is experienced in the move-
ments of troops over country sim-
ilar to that of Australia.
