DR. H. V. EVATT

Dr. H. V. Evatt. M.A., L.L.D., who is 36 years of age, is the youngest member of the legal profession lo be appointed to the High Court Bench.

Born at East Maitland Dr. Avail was educated at Fort Street High School and later had a brilliant career at the Sydney University. In reading for his degree of Doctor of Law he made a special study of constitutional law.

In addition, Dr. Evatt secured the University medal for law besides obtain- ing first class honours in his Arts de- gree. He was awarded scholarships in mathematics, philosophy. English

literature and law.

Dr. Evatt look a keen interest in sport and founded Rugby League, foot- ball.at the University. He was first undergraduate president of the Univer-

sity Union.

He entered politics in 1925 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly as Labour member for Balmain.

Besides being the author of nume- rous legal and political articles, Dr. Evatt has written "Liberalism in Aus- tralia," which won the Beauchamp prize essay in 1915 and "Conveyancing in New South "Wales" in conjunction with J. G. Beckenham, published in

1923.

He was admitted to the bar in 1916 and has since been engaged as senior counsel in some constitutional cases of

outstanding importance.
