Jumper for the Heavy
Figure.
WHATEVER may have the case
in the past, this year it is possi-
ble to reproduce in knitting any style
you admire. Here is one that will
please the matron, for its cheif fea
ture is the cross-over effect that is
so slimming to the heavy figure. Work
the stocking stitch with a tension of
5 stitches to the in., and 7 rows to
the in. in depth. You will require 5oz.
of Beehive Shetland Floss, one oz. of
contrasting shade, and a pair
of No. 4 knitting needles. The jumper
measures from shoulder to lower edge
17½in.; all round under arms, 36in.;
length of seam, 31 in. The following
abbreviations are used in the instruc
tions.—St., stitch; k., knit plain; p.,
purl; s., slip; p.s.s.o., pass the slipped
st. over the knitted st.; tog., together;
inc., increase in the next st. by knit
ting 2 sts. into 1 st.; m. 1, make a
st. by bringing the wool forward and
over the needle (this is worked as a
st. in the next row); st.-st., stocking
st., which is alternately k. 1 row, p.
1 row.
Back.
WITH the darker shade wool, cast
on 72 sts., and work in a ribbing
of k. 1, p. 1 for 30 rows. Now change
to st.-st., and work another 50 rows,
when the back should measure 10½in.
Armhole Shaping.—At the beginning
of the next 2 rows cast off 2sts.
Next row: K. 1, s. 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o.,
k. till 3 sts. remain, k. 2 tog., k, 1,

Repeat the last two rows three more
times (60 sts.), then work straight for
Another 26 rows.
The Neck.—K. 13, K. 2 tog., k. 1.
These are for the right shoulder. Place
the remaining 44 sts. on a holder. Turn
and p. the 15 right shoulder sts.
Next row: K. till 3 sts. remain, k.
2 tog., k. 1.
next row: Turn, p. 1, p. 2 tog., p. to
the end.
Next row: K. till 3 sts. remain, k.
2 tog., k. 1. Repeat the last two rows
until there are 4 sts. left. Work 3 rows
st.-st. Cast off.
Cast off the next 28 sts. on the hold
er, for the back of the neck. For the
left shoulder k. 1, s. 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k.
to the end.
Next row: P. till 3 sts. remain, p. 2
tog., p. 1. Decrease at the neck edge
of every row until 4 sts. remain. Work
3 rows st.-st. Cast off.
The Front.
CAST on 84 sts. and work in ribbing
for 30 rows.
Next row: K. 42, place the remain
ing 42 sts. on a holder.
Next row: P.
Next row: K. till 3 sts. remain, k.
2 tog., k. 1.
Next row: P.
Next row: K.
Next row: P. 1, p. 2 tog., p. to the
end.
Decrease at the front edge in every
third row, until there are 50 rows of
st.-st.
Armhole Shaping.- Continue the de
creases in every third row at the front
edge.
Next row: Cast off 2, k. till 3 sts.

Next row: K. 1, s. 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k.
to the end. Repeat the last two rows
three more times, then continue de
creasing at the front edge only until

Return to the 42 sts. on the holder
Work 51 rows of st.-st., and decrease
at the front edge in every third row.
Armhole Shaping.—Cast off 2, p. to
the end.
Next row: K. till 3 sts. remain, k. 1
tog., k. l. Complete the right side to
correspond with the left, with three
more decreases at the armhole edge,
and a decrease at the front until 4
sts. remain. When 98 rows are com
pleted, cast off.
The Sleeves.
CAST on 17 sts. and work in st-st.
In the first eighteen rows inc. in
the first st. t and in the next to end st.
of every row. (53 sts.)
Next two rows: Work to the end,
cast on 4. (61 sts.) Work straight
for 17 rows.
Next row: Decrease to 37 sts. as fol
lows:—* k. 1, k. 2 tog. twice. Repeat
from .* 12 times, k. 1. Change to the
pale shade.
Next row: K. 2 (m. 1, k. 2 tog.) 17
times, k. 1.
Repeat the last row five more times.
Cast off loosely.
Make the second sleeve in the same
way.
The Vest.—Cast on 17 sts. with the
paler shade.
1st row: K. 2 (m. 1, k. 2 tog.) 1
times, k. 1. Repeat this row for about
40 rows, or until the vest is 7in. deep.
Cast off loosely.
The Trimming Band.—Cast on 11
sts. with the paler shade.
1st row: K. 2 (m. 1, k. 2 tog.) 4
times, k. 1. Repeat this row until the
band is long enough to edge the fronts,
and the back of the neck. Cast off.
To Make the Jumper.—Join the side,
shoulder, and sleeve seams. Sew the
band along the fronts, and round the
back of the neck. Stretch the band
slightly when sewing it to the back,
and gather the upper edge at the neck
if necessary. The left side must pass
behind the right. Stitch the vest in
place, and sew in the sleeves.
