AIELB OURNE. .
(from oun own correspondent.)
Saturday, June 13.
The Emerald Hill election is about the only
thing attracting much attention to-day, tho
House at length resting from its legislatorial, la
bours Hll Tuesday. Air Hoffman I find at Hie
elevenUi hour, it having been distinctly announced
that he did not mean to bo put in nomination, lias
declared on for Emerald Hill as a candidate
against Mr Whitcman, and a most vigorous
canvass is being prosecuted by tho friends of
cither candidate. There is, however, little doubt
even for the "liberal " mind of wlueli way tho
election will go, and I am told the tiling is to he
tried oil principle, so as to show tlie amount of
" liberality " on tlie Hill. However, tlie polling
day Wednesday, will show.
Tho Indus has arrived from London. She is
tho vessel that some few nights since was seen
off the Otway, and was mistaken for the Kent,
Blackwaller, tliat-vessel being now diio.
The only sporting event of the day beyond
footballing is the meet of the hounds, who fro day
had a gallop after Sain Waldock's fox, which
however was again too much for the dogs. Thero
wns a very good field, including some few ladies.
The lady in grey (Airs Murphy) was as usunlwell
up at the finish. There were tlie usual proportion
of " disturbances in the seat " often noticeable at
these litHc gatherings, but nothing sorious I be
lieve.
George Spencer Compton, lately a clerk in the
Australasian Insurance Co., who is charged with
embezzlement, arrived from New Zealand by the
Claud Hamilton tins morning, ill charge of De
tective Bamiield. Tho information charges Comp
ton with " receiving certain monies for and on
account of the said company, to wit, £30 0s Gd,
and Hie said moneys did then and there em
bezzle." Compton disappeared from Alelbournc
about the middle of April, and was arrested in
Wellington on the 16th Alay. He wns brought
up at the City Court to-day, and remanded until
Tuesday.
The promptitudo with which tho liabilities of
our various Fire Insurnnco Companies are met is
often a subject of remark, and in support of such
Observation I nmy notice that the ugly gapenused !
by tlie late fire in Elizabeth-street is rapidly being
filled in. Tho timber yard is already got in order
and the buildings in process of reconstruction, nnd
Air O'Shanassy's iron houses are being rohuilt,
so that in n short time the ground devastated by
the devouring element will ho again covered. The
basement works of tho Now Town Hall arc being
proceeded with in a most commendable manner.
The walls of tho building are already somo five
feet from the pavement level, all in bluestone, and
from thence the building will bo carried up in
snudstonc.
The match of the Melbourne football Club
against an equal number of officers and men of
H.AI. 14th Regiment was played to-day on the
ground of tlio former, and caused a good deal of
interest and amusement. There was a large at
tendance of spectators, not less than 500 persons
being present to witness the match, which was
played with great spirit, and won by tho Alel-
bourne team, Air Loraino Boll locking both
goals. A few accidents happened, but beyond a
shaking the players were none the worse. Three
cheers were given for tho captain of the defeated
team, which was responded to with hearty good
will.
An impudent robbery took place a few nights
ago in Alelbourne. A man named Jolm Taylor,
who lately camo down from tlio Seven Creeks,
casually mot a notorious pickpocket. James War
ren, alias Dan Dicks. Warren asked his new
found acquaintance to have some supper, and
Taylor having visions of oysters and stout in per
spective, accepted the invitation. Tlio couple
went to a house in Beehive-lane, where there
woro a number ol women, and one of tho females
robbed Taylor of £5. Warren in the most chival
rous manner suggested that information should be
given to tho police, and with Taylor left the
premises. On coming into tho street, Warren
said to Taylor, " Is your money nil right ; count
it and see." Taylor, with an amount of con
fidence in his friend which is absolutely- re
freshing, took a roll of notes out of his pocket,
whereupon Warren snatched a £5-note nnd made
off. Warren and a woman named Ann Grant
have been arrested by Dotcctivo Kilfeckler, and
appeared at the City Court this morning, charged
with the theft, hut the case was remanded for
further evidence.
Our local manufactures appear to ho upon the
increase in almost every direction. On Friday I
fouiul that Air Nixon, whilomo a representative
man, who. has found that substantial business re
turns aro better than prospect ivu or perspectivo
Parliamentary emolument, has returned from
Sydney with some brother operatives, and will
shortly start experimental glass works, upon a
small scale at first, hut no doubt sufficient to
show Aloncy-bags and Co. that it will bo a profit
able undertaking; and wo may therefore reason
ably hope to find (lint tho importation of glass
will ho superseded by local productions. The
