Despite the heavy rains during
the week, the ground was
nearly perfect. Collingwood was
first
away and a clever
handpass
by M. Twomey let Thompson
in for a single.
Melbourne
followed with three behinds before
Coghlan snapped the Magpies'
first major—it had taken
13 minutes.
It was weak
forward
play
rather
than
strong
defence,
that
contributed
to the low
scoring—although
Lucas
and
Arnold
were
impassable
for
their
respective
sides.
Melbourne
had a
chance
when
Cordner
marked
McKenzie's
punt, but the skipper
missed
from 10 yards'
range.
It was a tough, torrid
quarter,
in which no quarter was
spared, and at the bell
the
Magpies held a
five-point
lead
Healey drove Collingwood forward,
but Arnold turned
them
out.
His clearing
kick
was
snapped up by Merrett, who
found Davey with a gem of a
pass for the Magpies' second
Collingwood were winning
handsomely across the centre
and when Merrett again drove
them forward the tiny Coghlan
brought the crowd to its feet
with a "Pratt-like" mark
the goal square.
Merrett to Purdon to Hockng
gave the Magpies' their
ourth. Then McKenzie
napped the Demons' first.
A
minute
later
he
missed
sitter,
but
then
combined
with
Beckwith
and
Thomson
for
Melbourne's
second.
Merrett
and Coghlan
were
match winners for Collingwood.
Merrett,
in
particular,
never
failed to "find" a "man.
He
passed to Coghlan for the Magpies'
fifth and the little
rover
drove
another
through
from
the
boundary
line—it
was a
gem.
McKenzie was in
everything
for Melbourne and gave
Bickford
a
chance,
but
only a
single resulted.
Then he received
*a pass
in
front and
made no mistake to leave the
Demons'
trailing by 19 points
at
half
time.
Melbourne
switched
Jackson
on to Merrett, and
Beckwith
on to Rose, in an attempt to
alt the Magpies'
centre
line
uperiority.
At the other end,
Hocking
went to centre
halforward
and Bill
Twomey to
he
Sank.
The
Collingwood
move was
an immediate success, as Hocking
snapped their seventh and
eighth
goals.
McGivern, who
was now coming into his own,
punted Melbourne's fourth.
Play
see-sawed
for
several
minutes, and although
McKenzie
and
McGivern
gave the
Demons
several
chances
they
could
not
pass
Lucas
and
Hamilton.
Merrett
again
proved
his
class when, with a clever hand
pass, he let Purdon in for the
agpies' ninth.
McKenzie relied
for Melbourne to
make
he
difference
26
points
at
hree-quarter
time.
Melbourne
brought cn
thentwo
reserves in place of McLean
and
Christie, and Collingwood
switched
Bill
Twomey to full
forward.
Clever play by Kingston enabled
Hocking
to
pass
to
Davey, whose long drop
9ailed
through.
Then a miss kick by
Pierce
was
snapped
up by
Smeaton and the country forward
got his first goal to make
the
difference 26 points
with
10 minutes to play.
Goals by M. Twomey,
Finck,
Richards
and
Davey
sealed
Melbourne's fate.
Of. the four
goals, little Merrett had a hand
^ three of them and continued
McKenzie, who had been the
Demons'
outstanding
player,
brought up their seventh and
then a perfect pass by Merrett
gave Bill Twomey a
chancebut
he missed.
The Magpies
had won in all
departments,
and ran out easy winners by 49
points when
Coghlan
goaled
with a shot after the bell
