An Unusual Design
In Lacy Jumper
THERE is no garment more useful in a woman's wardrobe
A than a fine, lacy wool jumper, for it can be worn under
the coat of a costume for out-door wear in winter, is snug yet
smart for wear at afternoon gatherings, or for pictures or
evening bridge gatherings, while in spring, and even in
summer, there are innumerable days when the jumper will
supply just the extra warmth required for a bleak or rainy
day.
THE Queenslander this week
offers its readers something
very special. The lacy chevron
pattern is fascinating to do and
looks very pretty when the garment
is completed.
The model was worked in 3-ply wool,
but if you like a finer wool you may
use it, and if you are smaller than a
34-inch bust, the pattern will not need
any adjustment. For long-sleeved
jumper as illustrated, 8oz wool will be
required and a pair each of No. 9 and
13 knitting needles.
Tension: Worked at a tension of 7 sts
to the inch in width on No. 9 needles, after
light pressing, measurements should read:
bust 34 inches; front length from shoulder
seam to lower edge, 18 inches; side seam
12 inches; sleeve seam 19 inches.
Abbreviations: k, knit; p, purl; st stitch;
mc, increase (by working into the back
and front of same
stitch); sl, slip; m,
make by bringing
the wool to the
front of the needle;
p.s.s.o., pass slipped
stitch over. Single
rib is k 1, p 1 alter-
nately. Directions in
brackets are worked
the number of times
stated immediately
after the brackets.
Commence at the
back with No. 13
needles, cast on 100
sts, and work 35
rows in single rib;
increase row: * rib
4, inc., repeat from
until 10 remain,
rib 10 (118 sts).
Change to No. 9
needles and work in
main pattern as fol-
lows:
1st row: k 1, p 3,
* k 8, p 9; repeat
from * ending the
last repeat with p
4 instead of p 9.
2nd row: k 4, *
p 8, k 9; repeat from
ending the last re-
peat with k 4 in-
stead of k 9.
3rd row: k 1, p 2,
k 2 tog, k 3. m 1,
k 3, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.,
p 7; repeat from *,
ending the last re-
peat with p 3 in-
stead of p 7.

peat with k 3 instead of k 7.

k 3, sl. 1, k 1. p.s.s.o., p 1; repeat from
* until 15 remain, k 2 tog, k 3; m 1, k 5,
m 1, k 3, k 2 tog.

ing the repeat with p 7 instead of p 8.

ing the last repeat with m 1, k 2, k 2 tog,
k 3 tog, after the k 7.
12th armhole row: k 2 tog, p until 2
remain, k 2 tog, (84 sts).
Work 3 complete patterns more as at
beginning of back, then cast off straight
across.

This is worked exactly the same as the
back until the armhole shaping is finished
and 84 sts remain.
Work 1 complete pattern more on these
sts.

k 2 tog.
With No. 13 needles, begin at the wrist
by casting on 50 sts. Work 34 rows in
single rib. Change to No. 9 needles and
work in pattern as on back for 7 rows. This
sets the position of the pattern which is
kept intact to top of sleeve. Continue in
pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of the
next row and every following 8th row until
there are 78 sts on the needles, working
all the extra sts in s.s. at each end of the
row. Work on these sts until 10 complete
patterns have been worked.
To Shape The Sleeve Top.—Keep the
pattern correct in the centre and take 2
sts tog. at both ends of every row until 52
sts remain. Now work in dec. pattern as
follows:
10 th row: P 2 tog, p until 2 remain, p
2 tog.
11th row: K 2 tog, p 9, k 8, p 9, k 1, k
2 tog.
12th row: K 2 tog, k 9, p 8, k 9, p 1.
13th row: P 2 tog, p 7, k 2 tog, k 3, m
1, k 3, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., p 7, p 2 tog.
14th row: K 2 tog, k 6, p 9, k 6, k 2 tog.
15th row: P 2 tog, p 4. k 2 tog, k 3, m
1, k 1, m 1, k 3, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., p 4, p 2
tog.
16th row: K 2 tog, k 3, p 11, k 3, k 2
tog.
17th row: P 2 tog, p 1, k 2 tog, ( k 3, m
1) twice, k 3, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., p 1, p 2
tog.
18th row: K 2 tog, p 13, k 2 tog.
19th row: K 2 tog, k 3, m 1, k 5, m 1,
k 3. sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.
20th row: P 2 tog, p 11, p 2 tog (13 sts).
Cast off.
Work a second sleeve in the same man-
ner.
To Make Up The Jumper.—First press
all pieces with a hot iron over a damp
cloth on the wrong side of the work. Join
the shoulder seams, beginning at the arm-
hole end and taking 1 st from each side
at a time until about 4 inches has been
joined, leaving the rest for the middle of
the neck to form the cowl. Set the sleeves
into armholes, and press these seams while
the work is open. Join the sleeve and side
seams in one long line and press.
