'T'HE second Festival of Aus

A tralian Music will be held in Adelaide from August 20 to 29. Professor John Bishop, of Adelaide University, is calling for Australian composers to submit scores for consideration. pENGUIN BOOKS have just ?*? published "A Dictionary of Music," compiled by R. 111 ing, to fill 318 pages of smallish print.

At the price, the book is good value, although its small size, and the rules that the compiler has accordingly made, have numerous disadvantages. It is disconcerting to see that Coleridge-Taylor gets seven lines to Mahler's four, and that Sibelius and Stravinsky get the mere entry: "Still living."

T^HE performance of Strauss' *? "Gypsy Baron" at the Conservatorium on April 27 by the Metropolitan Musical So- ciety is said to be the first per- formance in Australia of this bright and tuneful operetta.

The producers, who arranged for a local English translation, believe the show will be the costliest ever done by an Aus- tralian amateur musical group.
