Flooding, food shortages in north Qld
BRISBANE: Large areas of
the north-east Queensland
coast were under serious threat
of flooding as a rain depression
left by tropical cyclone Peter
hovered 50 kilometres north of
Cooktown.
More than 50 people have been
evacuated from flooded homes
near Cairns and motorists were
stranded on flooded sections of the
Bruce Highway.
Power has been cut in some
areas and supplies of meat and
milk are running out in Cairns.
The Brisbane Cyclone Warning
Centre reissued late yesterday its
tropical cyclone watch for coastal
areas from Cape Flattery to In
nisfail.
It said that until the low weak
ened further or moved inland,
there was still a possibility of a
tropical cyclone redeveloping.
Floodwaters rose in many areas
between Mossman in the far north
to Ingham, about 260 kilometres to
the south and torrential rain fell
and gales blew.
Telephone lines to Cooktown,
north of Mossman, Thursday Is
land and Coen remained cut yes
terday and Cairns airport was
closed to some aircraft.
