NSW vetoes
school cane
SYDNEY: Legislation banning
the use of the cane in all NSW
schools has been welcomed by
the NSW Independent Kducation
Union.
NSW Education Minister
John Aquilina said corporal
punishment would be outlawed
in public schools from today,
and in non-government schools
from 1997.

National privacy laws are ex
pected to be strengthened to
cover the expanding range of
new technologies such as smart
cards, about which federal Pri
vacy Commissioner Kevin
O'Connor has expressed contin
ued concern.
Federal Cabinet has agreed in
principle to expanding the laws,
which currently cover public
authorities and private credit
reporting operations, according
to government sources.
New numbers
SYDNEY: Telephone numbers
of about 13,000 telephone sub
scribers in regional NSW would
be changed from next year, Aus
tel announced yesterday.
The change will affect resi
dential and business phones and
facsimiles in Woy Woy, Goul
burn, Yarrabandai, Smithtown,
Hat Head, Lisinore, Dudley, Or
ange, Griffith and Tamworth.
