MR. PERCY DEANE
RESIGNS

CANBERRA, Thursday.-Because of
ill-health, Mr. Percy Deane, formerly
one of the best-known public servants
in Australia, has forwarded to the Com
monwealth Government his resignation
as a member of one of the Common
wealth War Pensions tribunals.
Mr. Deane has had a most spectacu
lar career in the Commonwealth ser
vice. Born in 1890, he enlisted with
the A.I.F. in 1914, and after service
abroad was selected from thousands of
applicants as private secretary to the
war-time Prime Minister (Mr. Hughes).
He attained eminence as secretary to
the Prime Minister's Department, which
post he held until 1928, when he was
appointed permanent head of the Home
Affairs Department.
In 1932 this department was abolished,
and Mr. Deane was appointed to the
newly formed War Pensions Entitle
ment Tribunal
