NEW ROVER FOR STURT
A. WILLIAMS PLEASES
Accurate Goalkicker
Sturt Football Club officials are con.
gratulating themselves on their dis
covery of a promising young rover and"
forward. He is A. ("Pop") Williams,
formerly captain of Goodwood in the
Mid-Southern Association.
A brother to D. Williams, Weset Ade
laide rover, his height is only 5 ft. 1½ in.
If he is chosen for Sturt he will have
claims to being one of the smallest players
who ever appeared in a. league football
match.
The diminutive rover, who is 24 years
of age, distinguished himself on Saturday
in a practice match between two Sturt
teams-red and blue-at Unley Oval.
When not on the ball he played in the
forward line, and has already earned a
reputation for accurate goalkicking.
From eight shots for goal, he found
his mark on every occasion except one,
when he scored a behind. He uses his
head in a crush, and knows when to pass
the ball to a comrade.
He began footballseriously with a lodge
team-St. Patrick's-about nine years ago.
In 1924 he threw in hislot' with the Good
wood side in the Amateur Football League.
and the following year with Franklin
Street in the Young Men's Christian Asso
ciation.
Before he. was invited to practise with
Sturt by Mr. R. S. Beatty (secretary) he
played with Goodwood in the Mid
Southern Association for two years, win
ning the medal for the fairest and most
brilliant player both seasons.
Mr. Beatty is enthusiastic regarding his
prospects with Sturt, and considers him
almost certain of inclusion.
