MELBOURNE: A bitter Footscraj
coach Terry Wheeler blasted his play
ers after yesterday's loss against Mel
bourne at the Western Oval, saying
some were letting down their financial
ly troubled club.
The Demons won 16.14 (110) to
14.13 (97) but probably had the game
wrapped up at the end of the third
quarter after keeping Footscray to its
half-time score.
.The infamous Western Oval breeze
played a major part in the game with
Melbourne winning the toss and run
ning with the breeze and establishing a
healthy 36-point lead.
Footscray replied with a seven-goal
second term to get right back into the
game and actually led the Demons by
two points.
But the Bulldogs were unable to re
spond in the third quarter as Mel
bourne piled on five goals to take a
stranglehold on the match.
Footscray had to call up under-18
player Brad Nicholson who was used in
defence and was one of the better play
ers.
The win gave the Demons some hope
of making the finals.
"We have some chance but we have
to hope a lot of things happen with the
other games," Melbourne coach Neil
Balme said.
Both teams are now on 32 points
with eight wins and Wheeler too is not
conceding his season is over just yet.
