Study focus on rainforests
BRISBANE: Aerial photo
graphs taken SO years ago arc
being used by CSIRO research
ers to find out whether Queens
land's tropical rainforests arc
expanding.
The officer in charge of the
CSIRO tropical rainforest re
search centre in north Queens
land, Graham Harrington,
began the study earlier this year
after a colleague's work showed
many areas now covered by
tropical rainforests were cuca
lypt woodlands during the last
Ice Age, 6000 years ago.
Dr Harrington, has borrowed
Forestry Service photographs
taken during World War II and
is comparing them with modern
photographs of rainforest be
tween Townsville and Cook
town to find out how its
boundaries have changed.
